Wonderful visit to Whitmuir Organic Farm

July 2015Sarah Boyack MSP and I were welcomed to Whitmuir Organic Farm by Pete Richie and Heather Anderson. We spent a few really informative hours visiting the farm and shop as well as having a delicious lunch in the café. The whole enterprise ahs become an inspirational model for the organic  approach to farming and for wider agri-ecology issues and rural employment.

At Whitmuir, there is clearly a values based relationship right along the food chain. We saw the free range pigs and chickens, the community polytunnel and the butchery. Whitmuir plays a strong educational role with groups of children visiting throughout the summer and beyond.

sarahuprightThe importance of training for future awareness of organic possibilities for farmers was stressed and this is something we will be taking up. We will also be writing to Richard Lochhead Cabinet Secretary for Rural affairs and Food to find out what the plans are for a real public consultation as the Scottish Government Action Plan is renewed.

Pete Richie is also Director of the charity Nourish which you can check out here.
