To mark Human Rights Day 2017, the Equalities and Human Rights Committee (EHRiC) held a morning breakfast briefing session with members of the Gypsy Traveller community.
Members of the Gypsy Traveller community, including several young people, spoke about the issues important to them. This Human Rights Day, the committee has focussed on the level of discrimination faced by Gypsy Travellers in Scotland, as evidenced in the Scottish Government’s commissioned research on Attitudes to Discrimination and Positive Action (2016), which showed relatively high levels prejudice towards Gypsy Travellers.
David Donaldson is a key campaigner for Travellers. He explained that Travellers faced discrimination in education and were often being prevented from setting up camps.
In my opinion, discrimination and prejudice towards the Gypsy/Traveller community doesn’t receive enough attention. As the MSP for South Scotland I will work to ensure their voices are heard.
